Chelsea are determined to beat Manchester United and Barcelona to a £55million Tottenham star, while West Ham are keen on signing a United goalkeeper, all in Saturday’s papers.
CHELSEA DETERMINED TO LAND £55M TOTTENHAM STAR
Chelsea are reportedly determined to see off Manchester United and Barcelona in the race to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld. The defender has struggled to force his way back into the Spurs side after recovering from a hamstring injury and is concerned that a lack of action will hinder his place in the Belgium side for the World Cup.
Indeed, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has warned that Alderweireld’s place in Russia will be at stake if the 29-year-old does not get more game time.
Manchester United and Barcelona are both said to be circling the Spurs ace, with the north London club so far refusing to bow to his new contract demands of £150,000-a-week.
Despite suggestions that Tottenham would be reluctant to sell to Chelsea, the Blues believe that Alderweireld’s expiring contract gives them a chance, according to the report in the Daily Mirror.
The centre-back’s current deal includes a one-year extension option, scheduled to activate in the summer of 2019, which would see him contracted to 2020.
However, that also includes a £25million release clause that could be activated in the summer of 2019, as long as a transfer is completed at least 14 days before the end of the summer window.
Tottenham want around £55million for the defender who joined them in the summer of 2015 – but could have to settle for around £40m.
